Gary Smith

Gary is a European Patent Attorney and a Chartered Patent Attorney. He joined the intellectual property profession in 2001, with a master’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from Imperial College, London University.

He has drafted and prosecuted patents in a wide variety of engineering and scientific fields. Gary’s clients come from a range of technical industries such as:

• acoustic systems;
• analogue device electronics;
• augmented reality systems;
• big-data systems;
• computer architecture;
• efficient high quality low bandwidth and low latency audio codec implementations;
• integrated opto-semiconductor process technology and applications;
• light based communication systems;
• network protocols;
• space-time coded radio frequency communications systems;
• spatial audio signal processing for virtual reality applications; and
• video codec design.

In recent years, he has specialised in providing quality drafting of complex technical inventions and he has been responsible for the development and growth of a number of high-profile portfolios of applications identified as being within key fields for licensing purposes.

A significant part of Gary’s work is international, and he drafts and prosecutes applications which suit both the local jurisdictions such as UK IPO and EPO where ‘technical character’ is the cornerstone for convincing the patent office that an invention is patentable, and also in other ‘high value’ jurisdictions such as the USPTO where ‘technical character’ practices are developing at speed.
