Jeff has advised companies around the world on their intellectual property since 1986. These range from some of the best known multinational companies and their household-name branded products to university spin-outs and start-up businesses.
He specialises in advising businesses in the life sciences and chemical sectors on all aspects of their intellectual property strategies. This includes assisting with invention capture, drafting and filing UK, European and international patent applications, portfolio management, competitor surveillance and opinion work (particularly advising on infringement and validity issues), as well as supplementary protection certificates.
Jeff has extensive experience in opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office, where the validity of a patent is challenged – either in response to a patent infringement or as a proactive step to guard against a competitor's patent. This includes both written and oral representation of opponents or patent proprietors.
His work also includes due diligence – whether you are selling or buying a patent, or company with a patent portfolio – it is important to establish exactly who owns a patent, what it covers and the strength of the protection conferred.
Jeff has a wealth of experience in obtaining patents throughout the world for life science and chemical clients. It is crucially important to be aware of differences in patent law and practice in key territories such as Europe, the US, China and Japan.
